First off to Craigdarroch Castle, built in 1890 for Robert and Joan Dunsmuir by Warren H. Williams and Arthur L. Smith and was built to demonstrate the success of Robert as one of the most successful coal magnates in Western Canada and founder of the E & N railway, but was ironically never lived in by Robert as he passed away before it was completed. Once completed the Craigdarroch tower became the highest place a person could stand in Victoria, surrounded by 28 acres of gardens and woodland.

The castle was only lived in by his widowed wife and 3 of his 10 children for 18 years before Joan passed in 1908. With the estate divided up and raffled off, eventually becoming a military hospital, Victoria College, a music conservatory before being taken over by The Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society which has been working to protect, preserve and restore the castle and grounds.

Hatley Castle was completed by James Dunsmuir the son of Robert Dunsmuir in 1908. We were unable to enter Hatley Castle due the school season but we were free to walk around the beautiful gardens and grounds.

The castle has been the home to many movie sets over the years including;

Phillips Brewery

On the way home, we stopped by the Phillips Brewery where I sampled all eight beers on Tap and I must say that the Blue buck was pretty good but I preferred Dr. Funk. Unfortunately, they were doing some construction in the back so we were unable to go for a tour. I didn’t end up taking any pictures, lame. After heading to the fridge to make my selection I realized that Phillips makes my long-time favorite Longboat Double Chocolate Porter, pumped!

I’m so glad I got to at least visit the brewery and try more of what they offer, but I’m sure I’ll be sticking to the porter.

  1. Wow, that is some history on the castle. Pretty amazing and too bad the owner never had a chance to live in it. And you got to sample a lot of beers at the Phillips brewery I bet you were one happy man. Keep having fun and enjoy your adventures. ❤
